The most hilarious part is that he seems to be blithely unaware of the fact that religion (including Christianity of course) is already covered under the federal hate crimes bill and has been for some time now. Beyond that, there’s language in the bill that already protects religious leaders from speaking out against homosexuality. Just a boat load of ignorance all around.

During a recent sit down with Donald Trump, late night talk show host David Letterman said “anybody who wants to get married ought to be able to get married.”

This story is a few months old but nonetheless is still astounded me.  A California couple actually had to sue the city in order to get the groom’s last name changed to that of the bride.  Michael Buday wanted to change his last name to his wife’s partly because he felt closer to his wife’s family than his own.

He discovered it would take a $US350 fee, court appearances, a public announcement and mounds of paperwork to make a change on his driving license that is routine for women who marry.

After months of frustration, the Los Angeles computer programmer and his ER nurse wife Diana [Bijon], 29, took their problem to the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California.

A double barrel name would have been no problem, nor would Diana and Michael deciding to each keep their birth names. But California and some 40 other US states provided no place on the marriage license application, and driving license, for the groom to choose the bride’s surname.

I suppose there’s probably not a huge demand for husbands that want their wives names, so I get that it’s not an option on the license application (although it should be), but when someone specifically requests it, it makes no sense to me that request wouldn’t be fulfilled.  I mean what difference does it make?  Or are we only okay with women being the ones to give up part of their identities?

I’m still on the fence about Bruno, probably will be until I see the movie. But I definitely feel like it’ll be easier for straight people to absentmindedly laugh at this movie than gay people.

Watch as he sits tweeking his way through this interview, clearly on some sort of narcotic, not able to answer the simplest of questions such as how long the band’s been together or whether he’s actually met Willie Nelson. It’s a complete departure from how he normally behaves in his interviews.

Apparently Canadians were not happy with how he acted either in the interview, or on stage at his concert there. As they all booed him during their set.

It looks like the momentum from Iowa and Vermont is heating up as now D.C. is jumping on the same-sex marriage train.

The D.C. Council overwhelmingly voted Tuesday in favor of legislation recognizing gay marriages from other states — a move city lawmakers lauded as a step toward legalizing such marriages in the city.

If signed into law, the bill will allow gay D.C. couples to marry in one of four states that allow such marriages, then return to the District and have the marriage recognized under city law.

The 13-member council gave preliminary approval to the bill on the same day Vermont became the fourth state to legalize same-sex unions. The Vermont legislature voted to override the governor’s veto and allow gay marriages.

The D.C. legislation faces final approval by the council next month, then it must be reviewed by Congress, which has final say over most city laws.

Members also approved legislation that recognizes relationships that are similar to domestic partnerships in the District and have all “the rights and responsibilities of marriage” in another jurisdiction.

The District passed a law in 1992 that allowed same-sex couples to register as domestic partners. But Congress prohibited the city from spending any of its own funds to implement the law, until the ban was finally lifted in fiscal 2002.

D.C.’s hot mayor Adrian M. Fenty still needs to sign the legislation after the D.C. council gives its final approval next month.  Council member David A. Catania who is openly gay expects Fenty to support the bill.

Problem is, all D.C. laws also need to be approved by the U.S. Congress, and though we have a Democratic majority, we all know how spineless our dear Democrats really are.
